What holds together M. Águila's most critical, subversive pieces — and how to read them without a manual.
“Obra Negra” was never planned as a series: it accumulated. Works made at different times and in different media, sharing one mental state —tenser, more uncomfortable— and one decision: not to soften the subject.
The title as structure
In construction, obra negra is the building before finishes: visible structure, no cladding. The same applies here: social subjects, mysticism and politically incorrect material, with nothing flattened.
Drawing first
Every piece begins in anatomical drawing. The figure holds the composition even when color becomes almost autonomous.
How to look at it
From afar, to read the scene. Up close, to find the detail that undoes that reading. Nearly every piece has that double timing.
