How to start a Mexican contemporary art collection

Budget, selection criteria, documentation and common mistakes when buying your first piece of Mexican contemporary art.

Collecting doesn't start with money: it starts with judgment. Before buying, look at a lot of work —museums, fairs, studios and virtual rooms— until you can tell what moves you from what is merely fashionable.

Set a budget per piece, not a total

A clear range per work keeps decisions deliberate and lets you build a coherent group over two or three years.

Choose a curatorial thread

Collections that grow in value —symbolic and financial— have an idea behind them: a generation, a geography, a technique, a subject. In Mexican contemporary art, social critique, figuration and color are especially rich threads.

Always request documentation

Signed certificate of authenticity, technical sheet with dimensions and medium, high-resolution photography and an invoice. Without them, resale and insurance become difficult.

Preview before you buy

Virtual rooms and augmented reality let you see the work at real scale on your wall — the simplest way to avoid the most common mistake: buying a piece that doesn't talk to the space.

Talk to the artist

Buying directly from the studio gives you context, traceability and often access to work that never reaches the secondary market.
